DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 5 (Agrochemicals) The potency of tri-Ph derivs. of group IV elements in inhibiting the growth of first and fourth instar T. castaneum larvae was much greater for Ph3SnCl (I) [639-58-7] and Ph3PbCl [1153-06-6] than for Ph3GeCl [1626-24-0], Ph3SiOH [791-31-1], and Ph3CCl [76-83-5]. Pupated larvae emerged normally, showing that the pupal stage was not affected. The larval growth retardation may result from an antifeeding effect involving digestive enzyme inhibition. I and Ph3PbCl at 500 mmol/kg of diet completely inhibited larval growth (4th instar larvae) and provide a decrease of 56-59, 29-33, and 2-15% in the in vivo activity of invertase [9001-57-4], amylase [9000-92-4], and protease [9001-92-7], resp. Under these conditions Ph3GeCl, Ph3SiOH, and Ph3CCl were inactive. High concns. (5 ′ 10-4 and 2 ′ 10-3 M) of I and Ph3GeCl acting in vitro strongly inhibited invertase, amylase, and protease activities, whereas Ph3PbCl was moderately inhibitory and Ph3SiOH and Ph3CCl were inactive. When both in vivo and in vitro findings are considered, I is the most potent inhibitor of larval digestive enzymes.
