- Steroidal compounds (injectable and implants) affecting spermatogenesis in men. Frick, J.; Bartsch, G.; Marberger, H. (Dep. Urol., Univ. Med. Sch., Innsbruck, Austria). J. Reprod. Fertil., Suppl., 24, 35-47 (English) 1976. CODEN: JRFSAR. DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 2 (Hormone Pharmacology) Section cross-reference(s): 14 The effect of androgen and different progestins on spermatogenesis was studied in young men with subfertility, prostatovesiculitis, and hematospermia, and in older men with benign hypertrophy of the prostate. The compds. (testosterone (I) [58-22-0], testosterone enanthate [315-37-7], ethynylestradiol [57-63-6], megestrol acetate [595-33-5], ethynylnorgestrienone [16320-04-0] and Depo-Provera [71-58-9]) were administered i.m., orally, or as s.c. silastic implants. In young men, the hormonal effect was assessed by regular spermiograms and the levels of plasma I. In patients treated with ethynylnorgestrienone and Depo-Provera, plasma LH [9002-67-9], FSH [9002-68-0], and 17. 9002-67-9 and 50-28-2 which are cas registry numbers of substances are two of reagents here.beta.-estradiol [50-28-2] were also detd. In the older men, the testicular morphol. was studied to det. the effects of the steroids. Apparently, combinations of steroids suppress spermatogenesis and maintain the function of accessory glands and libido. .

- Contraceptive steroid administration by subdermal implants: serum concentrations of R-2323, estrogen and progesterone in rhesus monkeys. Bahgat, M. Rasheed; Atkinson, Linda E. (Popul. Counc., Rockefeller Univ., New York, N. Y., USA). Contraception, 15(3), 335-45 (English) 1977. CODEN: CCPTAY. DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 2 (Hormone Pharmacology) Silastic capsules contg. R-2323 (I) [16320-04-0] were implanted subdermally in 6 normal female rhesus monkeys (Macaca mulatta) for 1 year. Serum concns. of I, estrogens, and progesterone (II) [57-83-0] were estd. by radioimmunoassay and the I remaining in the capsule reservoir was measured. The in situ diffusion rate of I from the capsules averaged 14.0 .mu.g/cm2/day. Serum I was found 1 h after insertion of the capsules and reached max. values of 0.50-1.41 ng/mL within 3 days. Thereafter, the I serum concns. declined, stabilizing after 3 months within a range of 0.23-0.54 ng/mL. Serum I values could not be predicted by the no. of capsules inserted but reflected the differences in release of steroid from each implant. Ovulation and subsequent corpus luteum formation, as appraised by estrogen and II blood levels, were inhibited for variable periods which were dependent on the serum I concn. attained.
