DOCUMENT TYPE: Patent CA Section: 39 (Synthetic Elastomers and Natural Rubber) Dual cure site acrylate rubbers contg. both carboxyl and active halogen cure sites and having a good scorch/cure rate balance, and good phys. property balance in the vulcanizates, are obtained by compounding with a combination of Na stearate (I) [822-16-2] and tetramethylthiuram disulfide (II) [137-26-8] or Group IB, IIB, IVA, VA, or VIA metal salts. Thus, an acrylate rubber contg. Et acrylate 98, vinyl benzyl chloride 1.6, and methacrylic acid 0.4%, was masterbatched with a processing aid and carbon black, compounded with I 4.0 and II 0.75, tetrabutylthiuram disulfide (III) [1634-02-2] 1.25, zinc tetraethylthiuram disulfide (IV) [14324-55-1] 1.25, lead tetramethylthiuram disulfide (V) [19010-66-3] 1.5, or zinc tetramethylthiuram disulfide (VI) [137-30-4] 1.0 part, and cured. Unlike compds. contg. II, IV-contg. compds. had inferior cure activity. Of the 5 compds. tested, compds. contg. II and V had an excellent balance of phys. properties. The tensile strength of the compds. decreased in the order: V > II > VI > IV > III.

The structural features of vulcanizate networks are examd. in relation to their phys. properties. The system is evaluated by heat aging of the vulcanizates contg. various antioxidants and by the properties of carbon black-filled vulcanizates.
