(II) [25212-86-6] modified with o-carborane (III) [16872-09-6] or its acetal deriv. (IV) as additives were carbonized by heating in a reducing atm. at 10°/h to 1000°. The carbonized products were ground and oxidized at 600 ± 2.5°. III decreased the oxidn. rate of coke residues from both I and II, but IV significantly decreased the oxidn. rate for coke from II only, with the oxidn. rate decreasing with increasing B content in the coke. The presence of IV in the polymers had no effect on coke yield during carbonization, whereas III caused a decrease in coke yield.

DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 71 (Nuclear Technology) As a highly sensitive, simple and nonradioactive n dosimeter, CR-39 [25656-90-0] plastic plates doped with a B compd. (ortho-carborane [16872-09-6]) were prepd. After thermal n irradn., the plates were etched in an aq. soln. of 30% KOH, at 60° for 2-16 h. The etch-pits generated by 10B(n,a)7Li reactions were then counted by using an optical microscope or an automatic track counting system. The d. of the etch-pits on an irradiated plate increases with the etching time. When the etching time is kept const., the etch-pit d. is proportional to the irradiated thermal n fluence. The proportional const. is termed sensitivity, which is 4.2 ′ 10-4 for a plate contg. ortho-carborane at a concn. of 0.5% by wt. and for etching time of 16 h. By considering background counts, a thermal n dose of 0.025 mSv can be measured with this plate. The plates are insensitive to visible-, UV-, x-, b- and g-rays and are easy to handle because the detector and converter are incorporated. There is no possibility of underestimating the dose equiv. due to fading. Furthermore, the isotopes of B are not radioactive and thus are radiol. safe.
