DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 72 (Electrochemistry) Section cross-reference(s): 67, 76 IrO2 powders for use as anode catalysts for PEM water electrolysis cells, were prepd. and then annealed at different temps. and compared as oxygen evolving catalysts in a PEM cell. Best performance of the catalysts, at high current densities, was obtained when annealing at 490°C for 8 h. Here the best compromise between electrocatalytic activity i.e. the no. of active points at the surface and the elec. cond., seems to be achieved. The elec. 16941-92-7 and 7732-18-5 are cas registry numbers of chemicals which are used as reagents here. cond. of the oxide catalyst is found to increase by increasing annealing temp. whereas the activity of the catalyst decreases at higher annealing temps. The importance of high elec. cond. of the catalyst is emphasized and may be related to the geometry of the porous backing/current collector. The catalysts were studied in situ in a PEM cell by voltammetry, AC-impedance and stationary c.d.-potential measurements. Particle size and crystallinity were studied by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). .
