Excellent linearity over a range of 3 orders of magnitude was obtained above 5 mmol/L. Reproducibility was excellent and recovery of acetylcarnitine and propionylcarnitine added to urine was also excellent. The combination of TLC and SIMS is desirable method because interference caused by same mass no. 14992-62-2 and 17298-37-2 are also in the experiment. materials can be excluded by TLC. TLC/SIMS was also applied to the quant. anal. of acetylcarnitine. Excellent linearity was obtained above 5 mmol/L by this method. .

DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 9 (Biochemical Methods) Nmol amts. of aliphatic, short-chain acylcarnitines were detd. by a multi-step procedure including extn. from tissues by HClO4 pptn., extn. with EtOH, extn. with iso-ProH, chromatog. on Bio gel P-2, CM Dowex-1-HCO3- and CM Dowex-50 (H+), and extn. with Et2O-HCO2H. The latter ext. then was subjected to gas chromatog. by using 17% neopentyl glycoadipate, 3% H3PO4 on Chromosorb 101. Recoveries of known compds. were 83% for acetylcarnitine and 88% for butyrylcarnitine. Rat muscle contained 195 and 5.8 nmol/g of acetylcarnitine and propionylcarnitine, resp., liver contained 126 and 10.7 nmol/g, resp. .
