- Use of various solvents to study the effect of diazepam on cardiac rhythm. Pearl, Daniel S.; Quest, John A.; Gillis, Richard A. (Sch. Med., Georgetown Univ., Washington, D. C., USA). Toxicol. Appl. Pharmacol., 44(3), 653-6 (English) 1978. CODEN: TXAPA9. ISSN: 0041-008X. DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 1 (Pharmacodynamics) The effect of polyethylene glycol 400 (PEG-400) [25322-68-3], dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO) [67-68-5], and dimethylformamide (DMF) [68-12-2] on cardiac rhythm of cats intoxicated with deslanoside [17598-65-1] was studied. The former 2 solvents exerted no deleterious cardiac rhythm effects. However, the latter solvent induced hypotension and death. Antiarrhythmic activity of diazepam (I) [439-14-5] was tested by dissolving the agent in PEG-400 and DMSO. No significant effects on cardiac rhythm were obsd. However, I dissolved in DMSO resulted in hypotension and death. These results indicate that PEG-400 is less detrimental than DMSO and DMF.

- Effect of diazepam on digitalis-induced ventricular arrhythmias in the cat. Pearl, Daniel S.; Quest, John A.; Gillis, Richard A. (Dep. Pharmacol., Georgetown Univ. Sch. Med., Washington, D. C., USA). Toxicol. Appl. Pharmacol., 44(3), 643-52 (English) 1978. CODEN: TXAPA9. ISSN: 0041-008X. DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 1 (Pharmacodynamics) The capacity of diazepam (I) [439-14-5] to counteract cardiac arrhythmias was studied in barbiturate-anesthetized cats treated with digitalis. I dissolved in com. propylene glycol [57-55-6] solvent was administered in repeated doses of 10 mg, i.v., at approx. 45-s intervals to 5 animals exhibiting deslanoside [17598-65-1]-induced ventricular arrhythmias. Conversion of the arrhythmia to sinus rhythm was obsd. in 2 animals, while development of more serious rhythm changes was obsd. in the other 3 animals. Further studies on the effects of the solvent revealed that propylene glycol is deleterious to cardiac rhythm.
