For demonstration of the potentials of observing individual mols. a fluorescence labeled mol. in membranes made from dipalmitoyl phosphocholine (DPPC) was imaged. The position of individual lipid mols. in gel phase was immobile within an accuracy of 20 nm. Trajectories of individual mols. in fluid membranes made from palmitoyloleoyl phosphocholine (POPC) showed that lipid motion occurs random with the mean square displacements described by a lateral diffusion const. 1.1-1.2′10-8 cm2/s. .
