Phenols of discolored sugi (Cryptomeria japonica D
Phenols of discolored sugi (Cryptomeria japonica D. Don) sapwood. II. Norlignans of discolored sugi sapwood collected in the Kyushu region. Takahashi, Koetsu; Ogiyama, Koichi (Fac. Agric., Univ. DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 43 (Cellulose, Lignin, Paper, and Other Wood Products) From MeOH ext. of discolored sapwood of sugi, the main norlignan isolated was identified as hinokiresinol (I) [17676-24-3], the others were agatharesinol (II) [7288-11-1], sequirin C (III) [18194-29-1], 1,4-bis(p-hydroxyphenyl)butadiene (IV) [89148-27-6], and yateresinol (V) [73148-04-6]. The I was relatively high in sugi attacked by Resseliella odai (27.52%), in sugi attacked by Eponita granitalis (26.33%), whereas in discolored sapwood (9.19%), it was about the same as in heartwood (7.55%). These results suggested that I, in addn. to II, III, IV and V, are responsible for the discoloration of wood and the prodn. of norlignans in sapwood has a different tendency than in the heartwood as shown by the fact that the outermost sapwood has a high capability for producing I.
