DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 35 (Chemistry of Synthetic High Polymers) Polycondensation of 4-acetoxybenzoic acid at 300-400° involved side reactions yielding a difficultly hydrolyzed fraction of modified poly(4-hydroxybenzoic acid) (I). Such side reactions included the formation of di-Ph ether groups, Fries-rearrangement, formation of ketene or acetic anhydride, and, possibly, isomerization to 3-hydroxybenzoic acid. These byproducts not only influenced the properties of I, they also affected the crystal growth of needlelike crystals (whiskers). Even small amts. of free 4-hydroxybenzoic acid poisoned the crystal growth of whiskers. The reaction conditions required for their prepn. were optimized at 400°. Fibrous whiskers with lengths 3100 mm and length/diam. ratios >50 were only obtained at low monomer concns. (£0,05 mol/L). DSC, wide-angle x-ray scattering, and NMR spectroscopy showed that these whiskers were the chem. and phys. most perfect form of I. .

Thus, a compn. of natural rubber 100, ZnO 5, stearic acid 3, carbon black 40, silica 15, process oil 5, Bu p-hydroxybenzoate (I) [94-26-8] 3, S 3, N-oxydiethylene-2-benzolesulfenamide 0.5, and hexamethylenetetramine 2 parts was rolled and vulcanized 45 min in contact with brass-plated steel cords at 145.degree. to give a vulcanizate having rubber-cord adhesive strength (ASTM D 2229) 104 and 71 kg before and after 24 h of aging at 140.degree., resp., compared with 85 and 60, resp., for a similar compn. without I, and 104 and 70, resp., for a similar compn. contg. resorcinol in place of I which smoked with offensive odor during rolling. .
