DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 1 (Pharmacodynamics) The antiinflammatory activity of Phytolacca spaonin and phytolaccagenin [1802-12-6] isolated from the roots of Phytolacca americana was investigated. Phytolacca saponin and phytolaccagenin, given parenterally, exhibited potent inhibitory effects on acute edema in rats and in mice. Oral administration required a 6-fold higher dosage than i.p. injection. The antiexudative and antigranulomatous activities of the saponin were 8 times higher than those of hydrocortisone. The saponin produced a severe thymolysis at high doses.
