Cell growth showed max. response 4 days following transfer to media contg. 1.5 .mu.g/mL soybean agglutinin. The increase in thymidine incorporation induced by soybean agglutinin was partially inhibited by 0.1 mM N-acetyl-D-galactosamine [1811-31-0], a competitive hapten.

DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 3 (Biochemical Interactions) In mutant Chinese hamster lung cells, the effect of various carbohydrates on D-mannosamine [14307-02-9] inhibition of growth was examd. Among the carbohydrates tested, D-galactosamine [7535-00-4], N-acetylgalactosamine [1811-31-0], and N-acetylglucosamine [7512-17-6] were apparently and N-acetylmannosamine [3615-17-6] slightly effective in reversing the D-mannosamine inhibition of the growth of mutant cells, but D-mannose, D-galactose, and L-fucose were not. D-mannosamine inhibition of the growth of parent cells was not reversed by addn. of these substrates.
