DOCUMENT TYPE: Patent CA Section: 5 (Agrochemical Bioregulators) Certain water-insol. xanthene dyes, e.g. erythrosin B [16423-68-0], phloxin B [18472-87-2], rose bengal [11121-48-5], octabromofluorescein [94418-47-0], and fluorescein [2321-07-5], (free acid or Al lake) have photodynamic insecticidal activity superior to their water-sol. Na salt forms, esp. when combined with a dispersant. Thus, the 24 h LC50 (median lethal concn.) for erythrosin B to Culex larvae was 10-fold more in the presence of Na lauryl sulfate [151-21-3]; also, erythrosin B was one order of magnitude more toxic than its Na salt to Culex. There was no difference in the toxicity of erythrosin B and fluorescein due to different dispersants. The toxicities of erythrosin B Al lake [12227-78-0] and erythrosin B to Culex were similar in the presence of the dispersant, whereas the Al lake without the dispersant was less toxic than the free acid. No significant differences were found between the toxicities of xanthene dye mixts. and the toxicities of individual components.
