DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 67 (Catalysis and Reaction Kinetics) The kinetics of redn. of 15 substituted pyridine N-oxides by Cr(II) were studied in 1 mol/dm3 HClO4. The reactions proceeded by the stepwise redn. of pyridine N-oxide mols. via a free-radical path. Compds. with coordinating substituents in the ortho or para positon reacted faster (k >0.3 dm3/mol/s) than the others (k <2 .times. 10-3 dm3/mol/s). These substituent effects were discussed in terms of the ability of the pyridine N-oxides to coordinate to Cr(II) through groups other than the N-oxide, and the relative stabilities of the free-radical intermediates. .
