These chemicals are also mentioned in this article., useful for prepg. derivs. of monosaccharides, are synthesized by reaction of a saccharide (addn. of water for hydrolysis is necessary in the cases of di- or polysaccharide) with acetone and concd. sulfuric acid, neutralization of the reaction mixt., filtration to remove the formed solid, evapn. of the acetone in the filtrate, dissolving the syrupy residue in an arom. solvent such as toluene, and chromatographing the soln. over silica gel. Concd. sulfuric acid was added to a mixt. of saccharide, acetone, and water, the mixt. was allowed to react for 300 min, cooled, neutralized to pH 8, and filtered, the formed solid was removed by filtration, the filtrate was evapd. under reduced pressure to remove the acetone, the syrupy residue was dissolved in toluene, and the soln. was chromatographed over silica gel to give an eluate (I). After evapn. of an aliquot of eluate I a solid contg. 48% glucofuranose 1,2:5,6-diacetonide and 49% fructopyranose 2,3:4,5-diacetonide was obtained. The rest of eluate I was evapd., the formed solid was dissolved in aq. ethanol, concd. sulfuric acid was added, and the resulting mixt. was agitated for 420 min to give, after neutralization and evapn., a white solid contg. 47% a-D-glucofuranose 1,2-acetonide and 48% fructose 2,3:4,5-diacetonide. Eluate I was reacted with palmitoyl chloride in the presence of Et3N at 60° gave glucose diacetonide 3-palmitate. Other derivs. of monosaccharides were prepd. similarly. .
