DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 1 (Pharmacodynamics) An air conditioning app. and tracheal cannula were redesigned to improve the Perry and Boyd's method (1941) for evaluating the efficacy of expectorants, and basic exptl. conditions essential for quant. collection of respiratory tract fluid as expectorants increased vol. of respiratory tract fluid (VRTF) were detd. Bromhexine chloride [611-75-6] and emetine-HCl [316-42-7] as expectorants increased VRTF, and the former showed far more remarkable effects. Codeine phosphate [52-28-8] and dextromethorphan-HCl [18609-21-7] as antitussives, isoproterenol-HCl [51-30-9], clorprenaline-HCl [6933-90-0] and C 78 [56776-01-3] as brochodilators decreased VRTF. On the other hand fominoben-HCl [24600-36-0] and eprazinone-HCl [10402-53-6] as antitussives increased VRTF. This method is applicable for evaluating not only the efficacy of expectorants which increase VRTF but also that of other drugs which decrease VRTF.
