The parkerizing soln. contained Mazhef salt [18718-07-5] [Mn(II) phosphate] 60, Zn(NO3)2 60-80, and NaF 3-4 g/L. The temp. of the soln. was 50-60° and dipping time 20 min.

The phosphate coatings were applied above 212.degree.F and with Mn-org. compds. added to the phosphating soln. The Mn concn. in the bath was critical, and the main function of the Mn-org. compds. was to increase the Mn concn. The necessity of a processing temp. >212.degree.F was attributed to an exponential increase in the reaction rate const. with increasing temp. for the conversion of Mn(H2PO4)2 to Mn3(PO4)2. .
