DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 5 (Agrochemicals) Seven dinitroanilines (butralin [33629-47-9], dinitramine [29091-05-2], fluchloralin [33245-39-5], oryzalin (I) [19044-88-3], pendimethalin [40487-42-1], profluralin [26399-36-0], and trifluralin [1582-09-8]) were investigated in 1976 and 1977 for their effect on growth and yield in 6 crops and for their effectiveness in controlling 5 weed species. Kidney beans and potatoes were the most tolerant of all the crops; snap beans and English peas displayed intermediate tolerance; seeded cabbage and seeded tomatoes were least tolerant to the dinitroaniline herbicides. None of the dinitroanilines injured red kidney beans or caused yield redn. though I treated plots yielded 17% more beans that hand weeded plots. Katahdin potato yields were reduced by dinitramine at the recommended and high rates while pendimethalin at 1.0 and 1.5 lb/acre, and trifluralin at 0.5 and 0.75 lb/acre did not influence tuber yield. Peas were stunted by all rates of I in 1976 and by the high rate of dinitramine, but yields were not reduced. For the 3rd season there was stunting at the low and recommended rates of dinitramine in 1977, but yields were satisfactory. Snap beans were stunted by 1.5 and 2.0 lb of I and by 0.38 and 0.5 lb of dinitramine incorporated, and high rates of both herbicides, but only the latter appeared to reduce yield. Seeded cabbage yields were reduced on eel silt loam by treatments of I incorporated at 1.5 and 2.0 lb after the wet spring of 1976. Lower rates of I in 1977 with half the rainfall of the previous season did not interfere with yield. Seeded tomatoes were very vulnerable to all dinitroanilines evaluated. While all the dinitroaniline herbicides controlled redroot pigweed (Amranthus retroflexus ) and common lambsquarter (Chenopodium album), the other weed species were resistant to many of the herbicides. Only I and pendimethalin were effective on G. ciliata, and G. parviflora and ladysthumb (Polygonum persicaria). Common ragweed (Ambrosia artemisiifolia) growth was severely inhibited by all rates of I, 1.0, 1.5 and 2.0 lb and by the high rate, 0.5 lb., of dinitramine.

Trifluralin [1582-09-8] at 3/4 lb/acre combined with 3/8 lb/acre I was the most effective combination for fall panicum and velvetleaf control. Oryzalin [19044-88-3], at 1/2 lb/acre combined with I at 1/4 lb/acre was adequate to provide excellent broadleaf weed control and acceptable control of fall panicum; however, 3/4 lb/acre oryzaline did not seem to improve fall panicum control. Ethalfluralin [55283-68-6] at 1/2 lb/acre in combination with 3/8 lb/acre I effected excellent broadleaf weed control and good control of fall panicum. Excellent control of fall panicum was obtained when the combination of rate of ethalfluralin was raised to 3/4 lb/acre. The combinations of 3/4 lb/acre pendimethalin [40487-42-1] with 3/8 lb/acre I and 1 lb/acre pendimethalin with 1/4 lb/acre I provided excellent weed control. The higher rate of I seemed to be effective on velvetleaf.
