In vitro, I was highly active against Bacteroides species and anaerobic streptococci as measured by the min. inhibitory concn. In vivo, small doses of I given i.p. increased mortality in mice with Bacteroides peritonitis. However, by increasing the dose of I, survival was prolonged and mortality decreased. I.v. administered I protected rabbits from the effects of B. fragilis infection whether the organisms were given i.v. or i.p.
