The sensitivity of the instrument was increased by shifting the ionization regime close to the continuous ("jet") portion of the sample beam. A further gain in sensitivity was achieved by increasing the ionization vol. by a complete re-design of the ion source. A very low base-line level was achieved by using a geometry which prevents secondary ionization by the collision of ions/electrons with surfaces. These improvements resulted in an excellent performance from the app., which was demonstrated by dichlorotoluene and naphthalene spectra which were obtained under a variety of conditions. The detection limit of naphthalene was 5 ppt (mole fraction) for a S/N = 1. The method can be used to monitor trace compds. in gases (e.g., as candidate incomplete oxidn. products) for control of municipal waste incinerators. .
