The fermn. was carried out at 37°. The yield of I in 24 h was 31%, and the amt. of II recovered for recycling was 30%. The fermns. went faster than when done on a lab. scale.

Only cells immobilized on Ca alginate [9005-35-0] could convert 16,17-epoxyprogesterone (I) [1097-51-4] to 11a-hydroxy-16,17-epoxyprogesterone (II) [19427-36-2]. The enzyme activity in the immobilized cells was 65% of that in free cells, and use of the immobilized cells could be repeated >10 times.
