Mg compds. such as Mg trifluoroacetate [38482-84-7], Mg trifluoroacetylacetonate [53633-79-7], and Mg hexafluoroacetylacetonate [19648-85-2]. A soln. of the compd. is spin- or dip-coated on a substrate at room temp. and heated to 500° or alternatively atomized and sprayed on a substrate maintained at 600°. The antireflective layers are useful on display screens, optical elements, or as components of such as a dichroic mirror. Thus, Mg trifluoroacetate (10 wt.%) was dissolved in ethylene glycol monoethyl ether. A glass substrate was dipped in the soln. and heated at 500° for 1 min to give a MgF2 layer having n 1.39. The layer was resistant to polishing and reduced reflected light from 4%, for clean glass, to 0.5% for the coated glass.

Thus, 4MgCO3.Mg(OH)2.nH2O suspended in Et2O was reacted with I and after the Et2O was evapd. a cryst. residue of Mg(hfa)2.1.5Et2O.H2O remained. The latter was treated with THF to form Mg(hfa)2.4THF. The Mg(hfa)2.4THF vaporized readily at 160° without decompg. .
