For example, 10 g purified I methanolate was stirred in a soln. of 10 g levulinic acid in 20 mL H2O at 30-40.degree., the suspension was filtered, the filtrate was sterilized by filtration, and 7-8 g amorphous I monohydrate was pptd. by addn. of Me2CO. A mixt. of 0.250 g I monohydrate and 0.210 g sterile Na levulinate was milled to 60 mesh and placed in ampuls. This mixt. showed the same or better antibiotic activity when compared to cephalothin or cephalexin, and was less toxic to rabbit kidneys than a mixt. of I and Na pyruvate. .
