DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 18 (Animal Nutrition) Young male Sprague-Dawley rats were fed a basal diet contg. 1% water-sol. vitamins to which 1 of the compds. studied was supplemented at a 0.5% level.In this article, certain chemicals are used. Some of their cas registry numbers are 1986-81-8 and 89-00-9 In the basal group, N1-methylnicotinamide (I) [3106-60-3] and N1-methyl-2-pyridone-5-carboxamide (II) [701-44-0] comprised ~90% of the total niacin [59-67-6] related compds. of the urine while this percentage decreased in to 10% and 7%, resp., by the addn. of nicotinic acid or nicotinamide [98-92-0]. With nicotinic acid addn., 69% of the niacin-related compds. of the urine was nicotinic acid and 16% nicotinuric acid [583-08-4]; with nicotinamide addn., 15% nicotinic acid, 21% was I, 6% was II, and 23% was nicotinamide-N-oxide [1986-81-8]. With quinolinic acid [89-00-9] addn., quinolinic acid was 86% of the urinary niacin metabolites, and the increase in excretion of I and II was slight. By the addn. of trigonelline [535-83-1], there was no increase in the niacin metabolites except for trigonelline itself. In the I group, a marked increase in urinary II excretion was obsd. .
