DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 1 (Pharmacodynamics) Trials with micronized nitroscanate (I) [19881-18-6] carried out on dogs infected with either E. granulosus or T. hydatigena indicated that a single treatment at 62.5 mg/kg and 16 mg/kg resp., decreased the proportion of dogs infected with tapeworms. Some evidence is presented that micronization may give a 4-fold increase in the efficiency of I in worm removal without increasing the toxic effects to the dog.

Cambendazole [26097-80-3] exerted similar but less pronounced effects. Fasciola hepatica responded in the same way to I in vitro, although the much longer time of 36 h was required. The less insol. rafoxanide [22662-39-1] and nitroscanate [19881-18-6] also depressed ATP concns., in much shorter times, but did not have significant effects on total nucleotide concns. Studies on the effect of these agents on sheep revealed that I and cambendazole are effective against tapeworms, and depress ATP levels in Monezia and that adenine nucleotides are good indicators of anthelmintic efficacy.
