Fe. Thus, aq. AcCH2CONHMe [20306-75-6] was chlorinated to give AcCCl2CONHMe (I) [20132-74-5] 20.6, HCl 9.2, and H2O 65.7%. The soln. was mixed with 13 g CuCl, mixed dropwise at 60° with 511 g 36% NaHSO3 during 1 h, and aged for 2.5 h to obtain AcCHClCONHMe (II) [4116-10-3] in 91.8% yield with 89.7% I conversion. The raffinate (1488 g) contg. HCl 10.8, NaHSO3 10.9, CuCl 1.2 (4900 ppm Cu), and H2O 75.8% was stirred with 10.1 g 95% Fe powder (100 mesh Cu/Fe mol ratio 1.5) at 50° for 0.5 h and Cu was filtered off to give a filtrate contg. 45 ppm Cu. The cake (14 g) contg. 58.5% Cu (99.2% yield) was recycled to obtain II in 87.2% yield with 85.5% I conversion.
