DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 1 (Pharmacology) The induction characteristics of i.v. thiopentone [76-75-5], etomidate [33125-97-2], and methohexitone [151-83-7] were compared to those of propofol (2,6 di-iso-Pr phenol) [2078-54-8] in unpremedicated patients. Propofol (2.5 mg/kg) caused more hypotension, excitatory side effects and pain after injection into the dorsum of the hand than thiopentone (5 mg/kg). However, with regard to the latter 2 sequelae, etomidate (0.3 mg/kg) and methohexitone (1.5 mg/kg) caused similar or more frequent upset. Propofol (2.0 mg/kg) was equipotent with thiopentone (4.0 mg/kg) in terms of successful induction of anesthesia. Dose-related hypotension may contraindicate the use of propofol in hypovolemic or elderly patients. .

I produced similar respiratory and cardiovascular depression to methohexitone, but appeared to be more rapidly metabolized and excreted. Pain after injection was the only side-effect seen with I.
