Binding of Na chondroitin sulfate [9082-07-9] with surfactant was completed in a narrow range of markedly lower concn. than the crit. micellar concn. of the surfactants used, and the binding curve was extremely steep. However, binding of gum arabic [9000-01-5] with surfactant occurred over a wide concn. range and the binding curve was rather gentle. With respect to the concn. at which surfactants will start to bind with gums, the concn. of decyltrimethylammonium bromide [2082-84-0] was 10-fold larger than that of dodecyltrimethylammonium bromide [1119-94-4]. The gum-surfactant interaction can be useful in discriminating tests of various kinds of gums.

Rate enhancements up to 800-fold were obsd. The magnitude of the rate enhancements was dependent on the amine structure, particularly the alkyl chain length. Rate enhancements for nitrosation were also obsd. in the presence of micelles of phosphatidylcholine and Triton X-100 [9002-93-1]. A mechanistic interpretation of these catalytic effects is presented. .
