Saikosaponin a [20736-09-8], c [20736-08-7], and d [20874-52-6] in the MeOH ext. of these roots were sepd. by TLC, using AcOEt-EtOH-H2O (8:2:1) as developing agent and fluorometric scanning at 370 (for excitation) and 500 nm (for emission). These different kinds of Bupleurum can be identified by profile anal. of their chromatograms. .

The rate of lowering of hepatic NADPH-cytochrome c reductase activity by saikosaponin D was slightly decreased by adrenalectomy. The actions lowering the serum levels of cholesterol and triglycerides by saikosaponin D were not obsd. in the adrenalectomized rats. Thus, the antigranulomatous action is not mediated by the adrenal gland, but the action of saikosaponin D on lipid metab. depends on the adrenal gland.
