DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 2 (Mammalian Hormones) The effect of cyproterone (I) [2098-66-0] was studied on the autonomic transmission and smooth muscle function of the rat vas deferens. In the I-treated vas deferens, the endogenously released noradrenaline (NA) [51-41-2] in response to elec. field stimulation or exogenously administered NA produced rhythmic contractions (lacking a tonic component) which were abolished by prazosin - a preferential postjunctional a-adrenoceptor blocker. The biphasic nature of the nonadrenergic response elicited on elec. field stimulation in I-treated rats remained unaltered. As in controls, yohimbine potentiated this response thereby demonstrating the presence of functional presynaptic a-adrenoceptors (inhibitory in nature). The postjunctional alteration on the membrane function appears to be specific to adrenergic stimulation alone, since both tonic and phasic components were demonstrated in the responses resulting from noradrenergic stimulation of those produced by BaCl2.

DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 2 (Mammalian Hormones) The s.c. injection of the antiandrogen cyproterone [2098-66-0] into male guinea pigs did not abolish typical aggressive behavior, although the reactions were slower and less frequent. In addn., cyproterone did not alter individual variations in behavior, i.e., animals that were strongly aggressive (or that showed flight actions) before treatment were similar after cyproterone. The testes of treated animals were retracted and atrophied, and the thin seminiferous epithelium contained only a few late spermatids. Germ cells apparently developed up to the early spermatid stage, but then degenerated. No changes in the Leydig cells were evident.
