Silica gel TLC was unable to sep. all 5 glucosides. G. manshurica, G. seabra, G. triflora, G. atuntriensis, G. rigescens, G. cephalantha And G. suffristescens contained gentiopicroside, swertiamarin, and sweroside. G. triflora, G. atuntriensis And G. rigenscens contained amarogentin but none of the medicinal plants contained amaroswerin. The content of gentiopicroside in underground parts was higher than that in aerial parts.

The highest contents of bitter principles (swertiamarin [17388-39-5], amarogentin [21018-84-8], amaroswerin [21233-18-1]), C-glycosylflavones (swertisin [6991-10-2], swertiajaponin [6980-25-2], homoorientin [4261-42-1]) and oleanolic acid [508-02-1] were obsd. in a perwhole plant basis at the beginning of the flowering time (5-10% bloom). Cultivated S. japonica should be harvested at the beginning of the flowering time rather than at the generally accepted harvesting time (the middle of the flowering time; 50% bloom). The herb harvested in this period has greater com. values because of its appearance.
