DOCUMENT TYPE: Report CA Section: 49 (Industrial Inorganic Chemicals) The purifn. of Ba(NO3)2 soln. by removing Ca2+ and Mg2+ by pptn. was studied using solns. of NaOH, BaS, and Ba(OH)2 of concns. 40.14, 14.5, and 14.5%, resp. The pptg. agent was added 0-100% in excess of the stoichiometric amt. The degree of purifn. was calcd. as a ratio of the amt. of the Ca2+ deposited to the total amt. originally present in the soln. of the reagents used, NaOH (40%) is the more effect than Ba(OH)2 and BaS solns. The NaOH is dissocd. almost completely in soln. producing max. OH- concn. in the soln., facilitating the removal of more Ca2+. The mother liquor should be purified after crystn. of Ba(NO3)2 and when the Ca(NO3)2 concn. reaches 4-5%. BaS soln. (50-70% in excess) can be used for this purifn. at 70-80°. .

The test was designed to simulate conditions which occur during the rough grinding of Ti slabs. The scratch profile was detd. to measure the metal removal rate, and the wear on the abrasive cutting tip was detd. with a micrometer. The use of surface-active grinding aids with Ti increased the metal removal rate, decreased the coeff. of friction, and decreased the wear rate of the abrasive. The grinding aid is thought to form an adsorbed mol. layer on the abrasive, which prevents phys. contact between it and the Ti. A BaCO3 coating increased the Ti removal rate by 83%. A comparison test was made on AISI 1018 [12725-35-8] steel contg. a plastic and a brittle phase. In machining, the brittle phase may become concd. at the sliding surface. .
