DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 24 (Alicyclic Compounds) MeCOCH2CO2Et reacts with RCH2CHO (R = PhCH2O, PhO, 4-O2NC6H4O, BzO) in the presence of piperidine as catalyst to give cyclohexanones I. However, PhCH2SCH2CHO affords cyclohexen-2-one II (R = PhCH2S) as the major product and I (R = PhCH2S) as the minor one. I (R = PhCH2O, PhO, B3O) yield their corresponding II when they react with piperidine in the presence of MeCOCH2CO2Et. Under the same conditions, I (R = 4-O2NC6H4O) affords a mixt. of 4,6-diethoxycarbonyl-5-(p-nitrophenoxy)methyl-3-methyl-2-cyclohexeno ne and 4,6-diethoxycarbonyl-5-(p-nitrophenoxy)methyl-3-methyl-3-cyclohexeno ne. .
