DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 37 (Plastics Manufacture and Processing) Twelve polymeric complexes of nickel(II) have been obtained using a new ligand a-dipyridyl disulfide (I) [2127-03-9]. The complex cation possesses the general formula [-NiI-]n2n+; the various anions used are Cl-, NO3-, CH3COO-, SO42-, [Fe(CN)5NO]2- and C4H4O42-. The complexes are assigned planar structures on the basis of anal., magnetic and spectral studies. I acts as a tetradentate chelating agent coordinating through both the S atoms and pyridine N. Steric factors prevent the coordination of all 4 donors to the same metal ion and hence polymeric complexes are formed. Treatment of these planar complexes with addnl. donors such as pyridine, picoline (am) or diamines (dam), results in the formation of polymeric octahedral complexes of the type [-NiIam2 or dam-]n2n+.
