DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 4 (Toxicology) Iranian fat-tailed sheep and dairy goats were administered monosodium methanearsonate (MSMA) [2163-80-6] orally at a dose of 10 mg MSMA (as As)/kg. The concn. time curves of MSMA in the blood of sheep and goats followed a 1st-order composite exponential equation. As from MSMA was readily absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract and distributed in the body fluids and the various tissues. Approx. 90% of the As was excreted in the urine within 120 h and small amts. were also recovered in feces. As accumulation in the tissues was low and urinary excretion was the most important exit route. As concns. in milk were low when compared to the controls, which indicates that As is not excreted in the milk to significant levels. The absorption, distribution, and overall elimination rate consts. for the 2 animal species studied were statistically different at the 0.95 level of confidence which indicates that there are apparently differences in MSMA metab. by sheep and goats.

The 96-h LC50 (concn. that causes 50% lethality) and EC50 (concn. that causes 50% survivors to be abnormal) for embryos were 225 and 46 mg/L, resp. This was in contrast to adult 96-h LC50, which was 32 mg/L. Sublethal effects on early embryos include stunted development and malformations. The severity of these effects is directly dependent upon concn., length of exposure, and time of initial exposure. Major malformations include optic and musculature defects.
