Thus, adding 13 g soln. of H2SO4 13, EtOH 5, and water 10 g dropwise to CH2:CMeCO2(CH2)3Si(OMe)3 [2530-85-0] 49.62, Me3SiOAc [2754-27-0] 43.48, and Me2Si(OAc)2 [2182-66-3] 17.63 g stirred in an ice bath and stirring ￡3 days at room temp. gave Me2Si[OSi(OSiMe3)2CH2CH2CH2OCOCMe:CH2]2 (I) [80722-64-1]. Heating I 45, Me methacrylate 47, 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate 5, ethylene methacrylate 2, and Bz2O2 0.25 part at 70° for 12 h and postcuring 24 h at 85° gave a copolymer [88677-41-2] from which hard, transparent lenses with high O permeability could be made.

Other Si compds. also reacted with I, but were less reactive than II. The reactivity of these compds. decreased when I was treated with K2SO4.Cr2(SO4)3.24H2O under conditions simulating the tanning of leather. Thus e.g. the reactions of hexamethyldisilazane [999-97-3] with I contg. no Cr and with I contg. 2% Cr introduced 0.46 and 0.01% Si resp., indicating that silylation involves the same reactive sites on I as chrome tanning.
