- In vitro activity of spectinomycin against recent urinary tract isolates
- In vitro activity of spectinomycin against recent urinary tract isolates. Fass, Robert J.; Prior, Richard B. (Dep. Med., Ohio State Univ. Coll. Med., Columbus, Ohio, USA). Antimicrob. Agents Chemother., 12(4), 551-4 (English) 1977. CODEN: AMACCQ. DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 3 (Biochemical Interactions) The susceptibilities to spectinomycin (I) [22189-32-8] of 303 recent urinary tract isolates were detd. and compared to the susceptibilities of those strains to ampicillin [69-53-4], tetracycline [60-54-8], and gentamicin [1403-66-3]. Based on minimal inhibitory concns., 84% of Escherichia coli, Klebsiella, and Enterobacter, 31% of other Enterobacteriaceae, 7% of Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus (including enterococci), and 0% of Pseudomonas aeruginosa were susceptible to concns. of I that are easily surpassed in serum (£32 mg/mL); 90% of all organisms tested other than P. aeruginosa were susceptible to concns. that are easily surpassed in urine (£128 mg/mL). I was active against more isolates that either ampicillin or tetracycline but against fewer isolates than gentamicin. Disk diffusion susceptibility tests did not reliably distinguish susceptible from resistant isolates with any of the 4 antibiotics studied.
