DOCUMENT TYPE: Patent CA Section: 37 (Plastics Manufacture and Processing) Water-insol. phosphates, water-sol. alkylcellulose or hydroxyalkylcellulose, and anionic surfactants are used as suspending agents in suspension polymn. Thus, hydroxyapatite 0.5, methylcellulose (I) [9004-67-5] 0.25, and ammonium lauryl sulfate [2235-54-3] 0.1% were used as suspending agents to prep. divinylbenzene-4-vinylpyridine copolymer [9017-40-7] having granule size distribution as follows: on 200 mesh 9, on 250 mesh 22, on 280 mesh 44, on 300 mesh 17, on 400 mesh 7, and pass 400 mesh 1%, compared with on 120 mesh 14, on 150 mesh 46, on 200 mesh 22, on 280 mesh 11, and on 400 mesh 7%, for using 0.5% I as the suspending agent.

- Quantitation of anionic surfactants in aqueous systems via Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. Sabo, Marie; Gross, John; Rosenberg, Ira E. (Clairol Inc., Stamford, CT 06922, USA). J. Soc. Cosmet. Chem., 35(4), 207-20 (English) 1984. CODEN: JSCCA5. ISSN: 0037-9832. DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 62 (Essential Oils and Cosmetics) Section cross-reference(s): 46 An innovative sample cell, called a Circle (Cylindrical Internal Reflectance Cell), for use in a Fourier-transform IR spectrometer (FTIR) was tested for its applicability to quant. anionic surfactant detns. in aq. systems. Preliminary studies show excellent results for the detn. of Na lauryl sulfate [151-21-3], ammonium lauryl sulfate [2235-54-3], Na laureth sulfate [9004-82-4], and a-olefin sulfonate raw materials. In addn., a limited no. of shampoos contg. these raw materials were analyzed directly; results were excellent. The distinct advantages of the FTIR procedure over the commonly employed mixed indicator titrn. method include no sample or reagent prepns. no subjective evaluations of end-points, and rapid anal. time. The use of computer-assisted spectral subtraction and the possibility of spectral storage on floppy disks are discussed.
