DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 25 (Noncondensed Aromatic Compounds) Section cross-reference(s): 23, 30 Reaction of MeSLi (I), prepd. by treatment of MeSH with MeLi (Et2O, 0°), with 2,4,6-Me3C6H2CO2R (II; R = Me) and ester III (R = R1 = Me) at 25° for 2 h in (Me2N)3PO gave 98% II (R = H) and 98% III (R = Me, R1 = H) resp. III (R = R1 = H) was obtained (95%) on reaction of I with III (R = R1 = Me) in (Me2N)3PO at 120° for 36 h. I reacted with aryl ether IV (R = Me) [160°, 2 h, (Me2N)3PO] to give 80% IV (R = H). Lactones were opened by I, to yield methylthio acids. E.g. butyrolactone with I [(Me2N)3PO, 160°, 2 h] gave 69% MeS(CH2)3CO2H. .
