A specific 1,4-elimination of H2O without preceding intramol. H exchange occurs from [M].bul.+ whereas in the .alpha.-cleavage ion [M-C5H11].bul.+ equal amts. of 1,3- and 1,4-elimination of H2O occur preceded by specific H exchange between OH and the hydrocarbon chain. .
