(CLSA), coupled with gas chromatogrpahy/mass spectrometry (GC/Ms), was used to analyze for low levels of earthy-musty ordorants in potable water supply systems. An increase in both sensitivity and stripping rate was achieved by raising the ionic strength of the water samples with Na2SO4 before stripping. Concns. of 0-300 g Na2SO4/L were studied. A practical condition of 80 g/L Na2SO4/L was combined with a shorter 1.5-h stripping time to double the sensitivity of the unsalted 2-h CLSA. A detection limit of 0.8 ng/L was achieved for each of the following earthy-musty compds.: 2-isopropyl-3-methoxypyrazine [25773-40-4], 2-isobutyl-3-methoxypyrazine [24683-00-9], 2-methylisoborneol [2371-42-8], geosmin [19700-21-1], and 2,3,6-trichloroanisole [50375-10-5]. The method was validated by comparison, precision, and accuracy studies using natural source water samples. Recoveries of dosed geosmin and 2-methylisoborneol were 105 ± 15% and 106 ± 15%, resp.
