DOCUMENT TYPE: Report CA Section: 35 (Synthetic High Polymers) Radical copolymn. of N-vinylsuccinimide (I) [2372-96-5] with butyl acrylate (II) [141-32-2] in bulk or in benzene gave crosslinked I-II copolymer (III) [65396-70-5], whereas linear III was obtained in copolymn. in C2H4Cl2. The monomer reactivity ratios of I and II in C2H4Cl2 at 60° were r1 = 0.152 ± 0.020 and r2 = 1.54 ± 0.06, resp. The Q and e values of I were 0.10 and -0.18, resp. In contact to polymn. in bulk, no gel effect was obsd. in the reaction in soln. The formation probabilities of various structures in III were calcd. from the monomer reactivity ratios as function of the compn. of the reaction mixt., and exptl. data on soly., viscosity, water sorption, and softening temp. of III were given as a function of its compn.
