(<0.12% in free form) to an acid or acid mixt. in an aq. medium at -5° to +60°. Low I concn. is achieved by maintaining pH <2.5 or by slow addn. to the aq. acid. Thus, an aq. soln. contg. 37% I was added dropwise to 50 g aq. 16% HCl and 5 mg CuCl2.H2O at 0-5°. Samples were removed at pH 1.0, 1.5, 2.0, and 3.0 and heated 24 h at 30° to give 2-aminoethyl methacrylate hydrochloride (II) [2420-94-2] in 96, 96, 89, and 52% yields, resp. A II sample obtained at pH 1 contained 2% methacrylic acid compared to 0.06% at pH 3, indicating an undesired hydrolysis reaction, i.e., a lower limit on the operable pH. ..
