DOCUMENT TYPE: Conference CA Section: 37 (Plastics Manufacture and Processing) The adhesion of Kevlar aramid fibers to an epoxy resin (Narmco 5208 [51653-14-6]) was improved by extg. the fibers to remove spinning aids, finishes, etc., hydrolyzing with strong acids or bases to form amine groups, and condensing with 1,4-butanediol diglycidyl ether [2425-79-8]. The effects of treatment were detd. by dye adsorption on and elution from the hydrolyzed surface (with spectrophotometry of the eluted dye and x-ray photoelectron spectroscopic detn. of the extent of hydrolysis and attachment of the epoxide. Adhesion was detd. by a single fiber pull-out test.

Dampers effective at 20-160° were prepd. from 3 com. epoxy oligomers (bisphenol A-epichlorohydrin copolymer [25068-38-6], polypropylene glycol diglycidyl ether [26142-30-3], 1,4-butanediol diglycidyl ether [2425-79-8]), which also had good adhesion and resistance to solvents and heat. The products can be used in free-layer structures having good damping behavior at high temps.
