DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 80 (Organic Analytical Chemistry) Section cross-reference(s): 9, 61 A study was undertaken to evaluate whether pyrolysis-gas chromatog./at. emission detection (Py-GC/AED) and pyrolysis-gas chromatog./mass spectrometry (Py-GC/MS) can be used to systematically search for halogenated structures in natural org. matter. Two samples of aquatic fulvic acid (FA) and two samples of high mol. wt. org. matter isolated from bleached-kraft mill effluents (BKME) were selected to resp. Some chemicals with cas registry numbers like 24295-27-0 are also used. represent naturally and industrially chlorinated org. matter. Mono- and dichlorophenol were found in the pyrolyzates of the naturally chlorinated samples, and Me esters of 2,4-dichlorobenzoic acid, monochloro-4-methoxybenzoic acid and 3,5-dichloro-4-methoxybenzoic acid were the main compds. detected when a methylating agent, Me4NOH (TMHA), was added to the samples prior to the pyrolysis. These results strongly indicate chlorinated 4-hydroxyphenyl structures in the original FA samples. For the BKME samples, however, the main chlorinated pyrolysis products were guaiacyl- and syringyl-derived compds. .
