The alkyl-substituted quinones such as 2-ethyl-p-benzoquinone [4754-26-1], 2-tert-butyl-p-benzoquinone (III) [3602-55-9] and 2,5-di-tert-butyl-p-benzoquinone [2460-77-7] did not induce photocrosslinking in PMMA [9011-14-7], whereas they acted as efficient photocrosslinking agents in I and II. Photopolymn. of propylene sulfide in the presence of III or p-benzoquinone [106-51-4] was also investigated. III induced polymn. upon UV irradn. The photocrosslinking of II film contg. III proceeds via a cationic polymn. of epithio groups. A similar mechanism should be applicable to the photocrosslinking of I film contg. III.

Their antioxidant activities were investigated. At temps. higher than 140°, the antioxidant activity of LTBHQ and LTBQ was higher than TBHQ. In emulsions, these two compds. had stronger antioxidant activity than TBHQ, butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT) and butylated hydroxyanisole (BHA). .
