DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 63 (Pharmaceuticals) Citroflex A-6 (acetyltri-n-hexyl citrate) [24817-92-3], Citroflex B-6 (n-butyryltri-n-hexyl citrate) [82469-79-2], Citroflex A-610 [acetyltri-n-(hexyl/octyl/decyl) citrate] [91315-37-6], and Citroflex A-810 [acetyltri-n-(octyl/decyl) citrate] [91315-38-7] are new plasticizers for use with PVC [9002-86-2] in medical applications. Compared with bis(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) and bis(2-ethylhexyl) adipate, the plasticizers have improved efficiency, tensile, and low-temp. properties, and can be extd. with soapy water. Combinations with epoxidized soybean oil have even better properties. At plasticizer levels of 50-60 parts/hundred in PVC resin plastisols, the citrates lower plastisol viscosities. The citrates are relatively stable to shear on aging. They also have low acute dermal toxicity, ocular irritation, and are not mutagens. Thus, they merit consideration as replacements for DEHP in medical plastics.
