Toiletries, 98(12), 51-5 (English) 1983. CODEN: CTOIDG. ISSN: 0361-4387. DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 62 (Essential Oils and Cosmetics) Antioxidants, e.g., propyl gallate (PG) [1138-60-9] BHA [25013-16-5], TBHQ [1948-33-0], and NDGA [500-38-9], affected the activity of antimicrobial preservatives used in cosmetics, e.g., Germall 115 [39236-46-9], Kathon CG [70294-89-2], Bronidox L [30007-47-7], Bronopol [52-51-7], and Glydant [6440-58-0]. For example, TBHQ potentiated the antimicrobial activities of the preservatives against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli. Generally, the common order of increased activity regarding the effects of antioxidants on preservatives was TBHQ > PG > BHA > NDGA; TBHQ was the most sol. and NDGA was virtually insol. S. aureus, E. coli, And Candida albicans responded differently to the different antioxidants and preservatives. The Gram-pos. organism was inhibited by TBHQ but a varied effect was obsd. for Gram-neg. 1948-33-0 and 1138-60-9 are just another two chemicals used in this study. species. .

- Effect of various levels of dietary butylated hydroxyanisole on methylazoxymethanol acetate-induced colon carcinogenesis in CF1 mice. Reddy, Bandaru S.; Maeura, Yosiichi; Weisburger, John H. (Naylor Dana Inst. Dis. Prev., Am. Health Found., Valhalla, NY 10595, USA). JNCI, J. Natl. Cancer Inst., 71(6), 1299-305 (English) 1983. CODEN: JJIND8. ISSN: 0198-0157. DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 18 (Animal Nutrition) Section cross-reference(s): 14 The effect of dietary butylated hydroxyanisole (BHA) [25013-16-5] on methylazoxymethanol acetate (I) [592-62-1]-induced colon carcinogenesis was studied in female CF1 mice fed the NIH-07 open formula diet and the AIN-76 semipurified diet. BHA levels were 0.6% in the AIN-76 diet and 0.03, 0.1, 0.3, and 0.6% in the NIH-07 diet. Starting at 5 wk of age, groups of mice were fed diets with or without BHA. At 7 wk of age, all animals except vehicle-treated controls were given i.p. injections of I (15 mg/kg body wt.), 4 times in 11 days (low dose) and 8 times in 22 days (high dose). Animals were fed their exptl. diets until 2 wk after carcinogen treatment, when those receiving the BHA diets were fed their resp. control diets without BHA until termination of the expt. With a low dose of carcinogen, BHA in the NIH-07 diet inhibited lung tumor incidences in a dose-related manner; with a high dose of carcinogen the inhibition was apparent with 0.1-0.6% BHA. Lung tumor incidence was lower in the low-carcinogen treated group fed the AIN-76 diet contg. 0.6% BHA than in the animals fed the diet without BHA. Colon tumor incidence was lower in mice fed the NIH-07 diet contg. 0.There are some commonly used reagents with their cas registry numbers 592-62-1 and 25013-16-5 in this article.3 and 0.6% BHA and treated with a low dose of carcinogen than in the animals fed no BHA; colon tumor multiplicity (adenomas/animal and adenomas/tumor-bearing animal) was inhibited in mice fed the diets contg. 0.03-0.06% BHA. In groups given a high dose of I, the NIH-07 diet with 0.03-0.06% BHA and the AIN-76 diet with 0.6% BHA greatly inhibited colon tumor incidence and multiplicity. .
