Direct Blue 78 [2503-73-3] and C.I. direct Acid Orange [633-96-5] in water by a NaClO-based agent was investigated. The dyes were completely degraded by treatment with 30.1% NaClO. But the total org. C showed residual dyes, i.e., ~60% for C.I. Direct Blue 78 and ~90% for the other.

DOCUMENT TYPE: Journal CA Section: 45 (Industrial Organic Chemicals, Leather, Fats, and Waxes) The effect of retanning agents on the color depth and hue of dyed leather was evaluated using a 1:1 mixt. of C.I. Direct Blue 78 [2503-73-3] and C.I. Acid Yellow 117 [6459-70-7]. Depending on the type of the retanning agent, the neg. charge of the substrate changed to a different degree causing a different affinity of the blue dye towards the substrate and thus changed the hue of the dyed leather. The overall color effect of leather samples retanned with different retanning agents was also evaluated using C.I. Acid Orange 51 [8003-88-1] having high affinity to Cr-tanned leather, C.I. Acid Brown 191 [61724-16-1] having medium affinity to Cr-tanned leather, and C.I. Acid Orange 61 [6408-33-9] having low affinity to Cr-tanned leather. The proposed methods were used for evaluating the effects of several com. retanning agents.
