H2O, H3PO4, and a dicarboxylic acid at 280-310.degree. and 70-120 atm to give a prepolymer, throttling the mixt. down to 0.005-0.1 atm to remove H2O and unreacted monomer, and polymg the prepolymer at 280-300.degree. in a thin-film app. Thus, a laurinlactam melt contg. H2O 10, H3PO4 0.2, and adipic acid 0.2% was fed at 3 kg/h into a 12-m-long .times. 12-mm-diam. reactor at 290.degree. and 96 atm. The mixt., contg. 5-5.5% low mol. wt. compds., was throttled down to 0.013 atm at 50 m/sec through 360 narrow slits. The prepolymer was polymd. (residence time 20 min) in a 1.7-1.8-mm layer at 0.013 atm and 290.degree.. The end product contained 1.6% low mol. wt. compds. and had sp. viscosity 0.74 units 0.5% in m-cresol at 25.degree..
